ART IN THE LOOP FOUNDATION 2018

Proposal presented by Mark Allen


INTRODUCTION:

Mark Allen is an artist, photographer, designer, and filmmaker based in Kansas City, Missouri. His work has been exhibited in galleries and venues across the United States, Europe, and South America. Currently, he is directing a producing a short film shot in Kansas City, slated to premiere in August.

Below are proposals for the Art in the Loop Foundation's 2018 call for artists. Being inspired by the multiple locations available, he is presenting two separate proposals for consideration. For any questions please e-mail markallenconcepts@gmail.com


PROPOSAL 1


ART IN THE PARK
"PLAY DRESS-UP"

Today's modern culture is driven by our phones, the internet, and social media. It has permeated politics, entertainment, education, and spirituality. For this proposal, I was inspired by ideas on how to bridge our physical location and our internet worlds - engaging with an audience in both fields. Since selfies are so popular, I decided to create a space that encourage people to engage and "selfie" with the work.

I propose to build a large sturdy backdrop structure that will be hand-painted and installed in various locations throughout the 5 months of May- September. Each month there will be a different theme painted and be installed in a different location. On the Second Saturday of each month, I will organize an event at the backdrop location with costumes, photographers including myself, props, and other activities. Each month a video will be created that documents this event and location. A special hashtag will also be created so people can document and share their own personal experiences.

MONTH 1 - DOGGIE FASHION SHOW (Location West Terrace Dog Park)

One of the months will feature a Doggie fashion show, inviting the audience to bring their dogs in for a perfect photoshoot! Special consideration for this backdrop will be designs low to the floor - so people can get great pictures of their dogs against the various designs. On the Second Saturday, there will be doggie and human costumes/props available and I will invite several photographers including myself to professionally shoot. There will also be a trophy/award for best costume.

MONTH 2 - EXPLORE (Lewis and Clark statue)

Inspired by the story of Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea, a backdrop will be made that says "EXPLORE" and features various travel imagery. Related costumes and props will be provided for the Second Saturday event. Special consideration will be given to the history of Lewis and Clark as well as the history of the Native Americans. This backdrop will also potentially explore the "Water Is Life" movement protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline.

MONTH 3 - PINEAPPLE PARTY (8th st. Green)

Pineapples are one of my favorite motifs to create. For this backdrop, it will be covered in various colored pineapples and designs. During the Second Saturday of this duration, I will bring pineapple costumes and props, as well as a make-up artist offering Pineapple face paint. I would also like to partner with Molly Balloons and Pineapple Balloons (two balloon artists) to create pineapple related headwear and accessories out of balloons.

MONTH 4 + 5 - To Be determined

Should this proposal be selected, two additional themes will be created for the final two months. A B&W color theme and other fashion related backdrops are potential options.

INSTAX:

An Instax (new polaroid) camera will be purchased along with several hundred film exposures. During the Second Saturday events, I will be taking Instax pictures, allowing people to take home a memento of the event. There will be a promo sticker made to place on each one.

BUDGET:

Creation of the backdrop: wood, paint, hardware, etc.      $1000

Five times installation and desinstallation:     $500

Five sets of Costumes and props:     $750

Entertainment for Second Saturdays including Molly Balloons, potentially a band, photographers, etc. :     $1000

Doggie and Human treats and refreshments: $500

Instax camera and film:      $750

PROPOSAL 2 (MY PERSONAL FAV)


STREET CAR

"FINDTHE99PINEAPPLES.COM"

This proposal was inspired by both the Street car location and the call for a scavenger hunt. Although this is specifically a proposal for the Street Car, it can be further expanded to include the other AITL locations as well.

Pineapples are my favorite motif in my art. Since starting my pineapple obsession in 2015, I have noticed that pineapples are on the rise in fashion, decor, and other products. After making my obsession known on my social media accounts through my posts and art, other friends have started noticing pineapples everywhere too. 

For this project, I intend to create 99 unique watercolor pineapples, then scan each. Then, I will add a number to each one (1-99) a few other details about the project, and have them printed on adhesive vinyl. Working with local business owners and the city, I will hide them around them within 100 feet of each Street Car stop such as light poles, utility boxes, physically on the street car, street car benches, participating business store owners windows, etc. 

WEBSITE

For the duration of the 5 months, I will have a website "FINDTHE99PINEAPPLES.COM" which will have all the rules of the game, hints and clues at locations of some of the pineapples, and how to win prizes. This website can also be connected to the Art In The Loop website.

HOW TO PLAY

Prizes are awarded based on the number of Pineapples each player finds. When one finds a pineapple, they should take a selfie with it and save it to their phone. Players can win prizes by uploading the images to an album on their Facebook page and tagging "99PINEAPPLES" or by e-mailing them to findthe99pineapples@gmail.com 

Each pineapple will also have a single word, which when added up together creates a 99- word paragraph. That paragraph is a clue that also unlocks a prize. I have a silkscreen press and can make the t-shirts myself, which I would love!

SNAPCHAT GEOFILTER INTEGRATION

The First Friday of every month, a Snapchat Geofilter will be set up at each streetcar location. A snapchat Geofilter is an overlay feature that can be customed designed. Activation can be purchased on the snapchat website, setting up the filter at different geo-specific locations. When a snapchat user takes a pictures in that location at that time, they can select the geofilter to overlay on their pictures. The geofilters will obviously feature pineapples.

CONCLUSION

Thank you for consideration for these two proposals. I believe both proposals engage the audience's sense of play and encourages integration between social media and IRL (in real life) exploration. The first proposal would be more challenging because of the scale of the desired backdrop but could have a strong impact. The second proposal would have challenges in getting approval for each pineapple placement, but would be achievable. The most challenging part of that project would be keeping up with awarding prizes, but hopefully it will be a challenging enough endeavor for participants. Both projects would be very fun to create, I hope you enjoy them!
